Ski Masks Revisited

Many of you laughed at me when I put ski masks on the great big list of things that make me angry. Many of you disagreed with my stance that they are a public menace with no redeeming qualities. Many of you thought my campaign to have them renamed “robber masks” was a waste of time. But at least one public official has joined the fight against ski masks (albeit a full year after the campaign began). Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton has proposed stiffer sentences for criminals who wear ski masks when committing crimes. The chief proposes adding two years or 25 percent of the sentence, whichever is more, for wearing a mask. Thanks to Eric for flagging this

Now that you've brought this to my attention I guess ski masks make me angry too or maybe just sad.

Hate ski masks? The hell man. Obviously you have never been snowmobiling in a harsh Canadian winter. Balacavas ( or ski masks you you Yanks might call them ) are a necessity for surviving during those cold January days. And so what if a few bankj tellers get ansy because you forget to take your mask off after you come in from the cold.

Well if it's illegal to sell spray paint or cigarettes to folks under 18, or illegal to buy pepper spray or Chinese Throwing Stars in some states, or even illegal to sell one too many packages of Sudafed to someone... why is it NOT illegal to sell ski masks?

I agreed with Angryman's initial stance on ski masks. In response to Paul, being a snowmobiler (or sledder as they say in The Valley) is not an excuse for owning a ski mask. It just makes you an even bigger douche.

We each are the sole owners of our faces and should be able to choose when we will grant the public the (privledge, in my case) ability to see them. Anyone who says we should restrict the right to wander the world without our face exposed holds fascist beliefs. I believe the face should be a more "private part" than any other, more generic, part.

Ski masks don't rob people, people do. Do you think outlawing or changing the name of the ski mask is really gonna make any impact on crime? NO! Stop hatin on a cotton garment. I hope you all get frostbite in the face.

Every time I see a "Robber Mask" I always laugh a little to myself. I then state to whoever is around that ski masks need to be re-named "Robber Masks". FYI: I am from the Chicagoland area so I know what cold is!!!

Obviously, banning ski masks would have little impact since it would take little skill to make a replacement from a burlap sack or whatnot. However, enhancing penalties when using one to commit a crime could have an impact for midling crimes. There would be little impact for very small crimes (since the 25% would be small) or for very severe crimes--Are they going to execute you 25% more? :-)

As to all the whining about the cold, have you forgot the region we're talking about is LA? Even in the winter, all you need really is a light windbreaker. Now if you were talking Chicago or Boston, different story.

It should NOT be illegal to wear masks in public if you are not
commiting a crime, scaring anybody,
or escaping apprehension. When
somebody gets punished (oppressed)
for innocently wearing a mask in
public, it is a "victimless crime"
and that law is UNFAIR!. Enforcing
such a law is also a waste of our
tax dollars!
