Another Angry Man: Jim Stanford vs. Canadian Bonded Credits Ltd.
CAW Economist Jim Stanford is in the midst of a very laudable campaign against Canadian Bonded Credits Ltd. You can follow each step on his blog. In a nutshell, after being caught in the middle of a debt collection that he has nothing to do with, Jim is billing the collection agency for wasting his valuable time. CBCL takes the position that stopping their harassing automated phone calls is an adequate response. It isn't. I'm behind Jim all the way on this, and I encourage anyone in a similar situation to follow his example.
If you disagree with the business practices of CBCL, you contact their ombudsman Rob Gaudette by phone: 1-800-281-9636 extension 2561; fax: 416-753-4894; or in writing:
1210 Sheppard Ave. E. – Suite 712, Toronto, ON M2K 3C4
Interestingly, Internet searches reveal plenty of complaints about CBCL, but no company website. It seems CBCL embraces autodialer technology, but is hesitant to embrace the Internet. If anyone finds a website for CBCL or an email address for the ombudsman or president, please post it in the comments section.

I used to work for CBCL - not a good experience but anyways just thought I'd let you know that the internet site is under IRMC...Intellirisk Manangement
Hopes this helps!
Thanks anonymous! I'll be sticking it to these bastards every chance I get.

Jim's problems are unfortunately quite common. I had a similar issue which resulted in setting up a blog (www.irresponsiblecalling.blogspot.com) From that I've been introduced to numerous others who also have been mistakenly called.
To fix this we need to change government regulation - because the agencies won't change by themselves.
I new someone who worked at CBCL (a relative) and she snooped into my credit and my husbands family credit too. Dont they monitor their employees computer searches?? anyways she made up all kinds of stuff and spread it through the family.
I have been receiving harrassing calls from "Canadian Bonded Credits Ltd". They are looking for somebody who doesn't even live here.
I checked out the website for IRMC (thanks to post from anonymous) and found this info:

I called them this evening, spoke to "Butch" (I didn't even wait on hold!) and he assured me that he would do whatever he could to put a stop the calls.
I guess we'll just wait and see if the calls stop now.....
This is a letter I just sent CBCL, we will see if we get anywhere....

My 14 year old daughter for whom we purchased a cell phone last year for emergency purposes has been receiving calls from CBCL for at least 3 weeks now. Being only 14 she really didn’t know what was going on. When she finally asked me, I told her to write down all the information the recording was spitting out.
When she was finally near a pen when they called, she wrote down all the info and we proceeded to call CBCL back.
The collection call was for someone we have never heard of and the collector on the line informed us that he would remove the number from the record, which was fine. I proceeded to inform the collector that this was my daughters "Pre-Paid" phone and that they should reimburse her at which time he became EXTREMELY IRATE!!! and then so did I.
The collector even said something like "why does a 14 year old need a phone" at that point I was extremely fuming as what business is that of his!!! I asked more then once what his name was and he hung up on me.
I understand that CBCL has to hold a level of abruptness to get their job done but when they are in the wrong they should step forward and correct the situation.
CBCL should reimburse my daughter with at least a $30 Fido voucher for her lost cell time an troubles.
I have just started to be harassed by CBCL the calls start coming in at 7:00am and continue into the night. I waited on the phone line to find out what this was all about for approx 15min. and then hung up.
I do not understand how they got this phone number for me..due to the fact that I just moved here in May..and the phone isn't in my name.
This is not the first time this has happened..a different co.(ARO) started calling last year saying I owed for a canadian tire card I never had...I told them that I have a recent copy of my credit report from equifax and that it did not show any debt owing to canadian tire(which it wouldn't have since I didn't have a card).
I strongly urge anyone who has had to deal with these leeches to contact your local Ombudsman and MP/MPP and tell them your story..that is the only way to change the legislation and put a stop to these credit wrecking companies once and for all.
It is so nice to get those annoying phone calls at 7 in the morning on a Sunday no less. This has to do with a Dell acount that was fraudulently obtained using my fathers name and not mine (same name by the way), perhaps that should take the time to do a little research, see what the last known address is and attempt to make contact from there, and not to bother a person's son with which he has no knowledge of any monies owing.
Anonymous,
I am indebted to you for your posting Butch's 1-800 number.
For the last two weeks, I have been harrassed twice or more daily by CBCL's automated dialer "bot". It usually calls at about 7:30 in the morning, and then again some time between 6:00 and 9:00 in the evening. The bot probably also calls during the day while I am at work, but it has the decency not to clog up my voice mail. The "important" message is always for a Juan Carlo Fernandez, which is not even close to my real name. Actually the bot pronounces the first name "Joo-ann", which is somewhat amusing; I guess CBCL didn't bother to buy the Spanish text-to-speech converter module.
Anyway, I just got off the phone with Butch, and he assured me that the pleasant sound of my phone not ringing would resume within 48 hours. If not, then I am to call the same number again. Here's hoping that will not be necessary.
More news as it happens.
Cheers!
Do you have a street address for these people in Ontario? or in the U.S.
Hello,
I have just has a similar irritating experience with Canadian Bonded Credit Limited. They have call my house approx 50 over the last 6 weeks. I have tried to call back twice to tell them that the person they are looking for does not live at our number, however I have always gotten stuck in the loop of their automated system. Interestingly when I called them from my work phone, I got right through twice however I was hung up on twice - apparently I wasn't being nice enough.
I went to yellowpages.com and there are two entries for this company. I called both area code 416 numbers and the second number listed had an option to leave a message with the ombudsmen office. I selected that option and Margaret Delaney actually picked up the phone. I chatted with her for a bit about how rude their call centre people were when I tried to get the calls to stop. I also told her I was fed up and that I had full intention of calling/emailing other agencies with my compliant. She apologized profusely and said she was checking in their computer system for the file and I had in fact been taken off the calling list. She further offered to put a DO NOT Call block on my Phone #. She also said it takes 24 hours to update their system and if I received another call after that time frame to call her direct. Her number is 888-804-8198.
Hope this helps others.
Re CBCL: Wrire a letter of complaint to The Ontario Registrar of Collection Agencies,5775 Yonge St. S.1500, Toronto, Ont. M2M 4J1.
Copy to CBCL at 1210 Sheppard Ave.E.N.York, Ont. M2K 3S4 and copy again to the Company they claim to be acting for. Then issue a writ in Small Claims Court for your time and harrasement.
CBCL is Canadian Bonded Credit Ltd.1210, Sheppard Ave. East.Suite 104, Toronto, Ont.M2K 3C4. It is a subsidiary of Intellirisk Management Corporation of New York who bought it from Equifax a few years ago.The Assistant V.P. is Garth W.Walker # 416. 227.5302.Another name is Zita Pinto #416.227.5473. & another is Kim Smirnov 1 800.281.9643 ex. 2794. Another # 416.753.4900.
The person to complain to at the Ont. Govt. is J. Williamson tel# 705.564.8935. The Regstrar of Collection Agencies. Ont. Govt Services is at # 416.326.8555.
If you are thinking of taking this CBCL outfit to task consider a Small Claims Court action for about $10,000.00 for "Business Interuption". Make sure you document each and every call, record every conversation and solicit support from people who have been unable to get through to you on your phone.
I have recently recieved collection notice from CBCL for not one but two parking tickets with offence numbers in sequential order, meaning same officer, same date, same time. In additon it claims to be acting on behalf of the City of Toronto.Lastly the issue date of these tickets was Sept 1996 an incredible 10 years later. Contact with the City reveals no such claim by the city since my licence plate renewal would have stopped. Beware of FALSE claims by CBCL.
A Saving Grace...
According to the Collection Agencies act of Ontario, RRO 1990, Regulation 74.
In summary a collection agency may only call between the hours of 7am and 9pm Mon-Sat, 1pm-5pm Sunday.
The collection agency may only contact the debtor three(3) times in a seven(7) day period for each creditor on file for that debtor.
According to the CRTC, automated calls, including those from collection agencies, may only be made from 9:30am to 8pm on weekdays and from 10:30am to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday. I'm not sure if this trumps the Ontario Collection
Agencies Act or not, but it's certainly worth complaining to the CRTC anyway since they are a federal regulatory body, especially if you don't live in Ontario.
(See: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/t1022.htm)
These lovely people have been calling me between 7 and 7:30 am for the past month and a half, for someone who does not live here and whose name in no way resembles mine. They have also been clogging up my voicemail with hangups. Thanks to all the fine people who have posted info on this page, I will be contacting them to have this harassment stopped. Thanks guys!
Here's a quick update on my situation. My call to "Butch" did indeed resolve the problem. It took four days (a bit longer than the promised 48 hours but not overly so) for the calls to finally stop. So yes; I do encourage any of you afflicted with repeated calls from Canadian Bonded Credits' automated "bot" to contact "Butch" ASAP. For some reason, I can't help but break into juvenile Beavis and Butt-Head laughter every time I say that name. Heh heh m heh heh! Butch! Anyway, again, the number is 1-800-811-4214.
Cheers!
Is it legal to use a auto dialer to call these people back every day and ask for somebody who does not work there? How can they get away with such rude behavior?
Enjoyed the site. I also am being hounded by CBCL for my daughter who no longer lives with me. The calls are on my cell phone no less. I think it is from TD Visa. Stopped at the Gov't Information Office and got info on the Collection Agencies Act which prohibits collection agencies from doing certain things. Am in the process of lodging a complaint with the Ministry of Government Services
Hello,
I just found out that I have an account with CBCL. They say that I owe Rogers 1200.00. I called Rogers and asked them to call off the dogs and I would work out a payment plan with them. They have agreed. A friend told me that I may be able to work out a deal directly with Rogers for less than CBCL is asking for as they would prefer the money over paying CBCL to collect.
hi, just for the record someone from that company just called me. I actually googled the name because I'd never heard of it before. She was very nice...once I got a person (it only took 5 minutes). MSP screwed up...big surprise and she's sending me out all the right forms to fill out so that we can just clear it up. Turns out MSP actually took money off my tax refund and I didn't even notice lol. In any case, try to remember that when you talk to someone from an agency...even if it's collections, they're just trying to do their job and they really aren't out to get you...they just need to work like everyone else.
If you do not receive a letter prior to the phone calls, or they call you more than 3 times in a 7 day period.....
Place a call to the Ministry of Governent Services / Consumer Protection Branch 1.800.268.1142 and ask them to send you a complaint form. Once you get it fill it out and send it back to them. Make a note of the person's name you talk to.
Write and fax a letter to 1.416.753.4894 (CBCL) ATTN: Margret Delaney and Debbie Bilowus stating that you are filing a complaint with Consumer Protection, and that you did not receive the letter and/or they are exceeding the number of legal calls. Demend that the calls stop, and that you be sent the letter so you may resolve the debt with the debtor personally.
This should stop the calls almost immediatly, if not call consumer protection again....
I would LOVE to share my most recent encounter with CBCL.
I will give you a taste of the history however.
I have an outstanding debt for a Student Loan. I was one of the unfortunate who was in school during the years when The Federal Gov't decided they no longer wanted to carry such a large debt load so they transfered some existing Student Loans to banks.
2 of my loans ended up with the Royal Bank of Canada.
Had I known about these particular accounts I assure you I would have been paying them regularly along with my other loans.
I will be the first to admit that my financial situation was less than desireable however I am not one to run away from a commitment...I would have been more then willing to work out a situation..... This leads me into encounter #1
October 2005 I start recieving phone calls from CBCL. I am speaking to someone from the Montreal Office (I gather this right away since the menue was in french first and it seemed like it would still speak french to me even after I hit #2 for English....my rant and frustration does not need to be expressed for this particular section of this tale of torture).
After repeated return calls from me (I called them back for every time they called me)...its funny how they always say "you repeatedly avoid our phone calls, please call us back immediately" but as soon as you call you end up in a loop of french and english and phone messages that don't ever get to the person who has been calling....
After a few weeks of playing phone tag (I actually left the agent a message on his voice mail that said "tag...you're it") we were finally able to connect and discuss my situation.
This was when he explained to me that I had 2 student loans (actually thats a lie....I was told I had 1 student loan at first).
I agreed because I know I had a lot of debt from my post secondary (another rant topic).
I advised the representative that I would like to follow up with the bank and consult my records before making any arrangements with him. THis of course was unacceptable to him and he became somewhat volatile...of course I am what's known as a diplomatic person (I'm also a manager at a call centre so I know how to deal with angry people and I know most of the standard practices in this industry).
Once I managed to bring this particularly edgey rep down to a normal level he agrees to let me reference my files and discuss the issue with him at a later date.
As a responsible man I immediately call the bank, make 3 or 4 different transfers and finally end up with a fantastic woman in Edmonton who advises me of the situation (I believe she actually works for Equifax but I may be wrong), the unfortunate part is Yes the debt is correct and I do in fact owe the money
Well fair enough...I suppose I have to pay them back now....
My financial situation is certainly stable now but I am by no means able to pay off the grand total of $4000 (approx) at once.
The rep makes many desperate attempts to get payment in full immediately. These include begging, threatening and eventually agreeing to a payment situation.
The terms of this payment situation are as follows:
Total Amount Paid in full by Post Dated Cheque in incriments of $100 to be paid every 2 weeks.
Yup pretty simple...I sent him $4000 worth of post dated cheques, this was in November of 2005.
Every 2 weeks a cheque is cashed and my debtload gets smaller. I haven't bounced a cheque once, however they attempted to cash a cheque twice once so it was declined...they tried to threaten me again at that point until I had my bank call them and tear the poor fellow on the phone a new a$$hole, that worked out really well for me....just felt good.
flash forward to present. October 2006.
I recieve one voice mail at my parents house stating "please return out call at your earliest conveinience"
Of course my father phones the number because he has no idea what its about...they left no name it was the godforesaken auto dialer.
At this point my father speaks with Paul. Paul says "you have been avoiding our calls, you cannot run away from your debt."
To which my father responds "ummm, I have no debt with you and you only called once, however I do believe my son has an account he has been paying with you...I will forward the message to him and he will call you back"
I recieve a call and a brief recap if the situation from my father and I proceed to call Paul back.
It takes only a few minutes to get through to Paul and he seems plesant enough......
I say "Hello Paul, I am returning your call"
Paul takes all of my personal security information (which is funny because he didn't seem to need this information when he was being ignorant to my father).
Paul then asks me how he can assist me today (????)
"Well Paul, you tell me....you called me first. How can I help you? Oh also I would like to file a small complaint about the procedure"
"Oh and what was that complaint sir?" (He didn't actually call me sir I just don't want to use any of my personal information.
"Well Paul, my father was spoken to quite rudely by someone who accused him or in this case me of ignoring your attempts to reach me....however I just got the message now and my father has only seen one call so far from your company...no big deal I just wanted to mention it"
At this point Paul's demeanor has changed
"Well Sir, we are never rude you owe us this much I would like to recieve payment in full by next Tuesday" Paul Snarled to me...
Taken back I exclaim "umm Paul....what do I owe for?"
"Royal Bank Student loans"
I reply "Oh, I think there is probably just a mistake, end of the year I can only assume this is part of a year end wrap up....I already have an arrangement. You should see on my file that you have post dated cheques for the entire amount"
"Do you understand what a Demand Debt is?"
"Yes, but thats hardly the point, I just told you that this has been dealt with"
At this point Paul has decided it is in his best interest to quit communicating with me so he just gets really loud and starts rattling off a western union address with numbers and stuff.....
I try to interject by saying "Paul, Ive taken care of this already, you have the cheques. I'm not going to pay a bill twice...that doesn't make any sense"
Completely ignored.....he just keeps going.
Now Im pissed!
So I get antaganistic "Hey Paul, do they hold training classes to be a jerk? DO they actually train you to ignore people and just speak over them?"
He keeps going, I don't think he even took a breath.
"Is it a 2 or 3 hour seminar? Are you graded on how many words you can fit inbetween my sentences? Are they timing you to see how quickly you can get me to hang up? 'cause ya know..Im pretty persistant when I wanna be"
By this point he is reading the address to me a second time to confirm that I have the correct information (I assume he thought I was actually writing it down or something)
"Its ok Paul..I'll wait until you have to breathe....there is really only so many times you can say it all without having to pause....if I hear a thump I'll call 911 because I know you passed out"
Pause (I couldn't friggin believe it....he stopped
Silence
"Paul?"
"Yes Sir"
"oh I thought I lost you, well I got the info...now let me talk to your supervisor" CLICK.... BEEEEEEEEEP
That son of a bitch hung up on me......
I promptly call back the number...answering machine
Dial again ... real person.... "CBCL Hold Please" bad hold music "CBCL how can I help you"
"Im hoping to speak with Pauls supervisor" ... answering machine.....
I got through about 32 seconds of information and the phone went silent.....hmm apparently you have to leave a short message,,,I wish they wouldn't say "please leave a detailed message and I will call you back"...not much detail can be said in 32 seconds
I call back. I get Paul!
"Hi Paul, I don't think we came to an agreement before you hung up on me".
"I think we did, pay me by tuesday" Click...beeeeeep
bastard!!
Now I am really mad.
I call back and just scream the word SUPERVISOR at the first person to pick up. Click...beeeeep
I go to my parent house because now I need a witness
I call back and I get Paul again (oh Paul how I love thee)
"Hi Paul, I really think we need to talk more about this, I never had the chance to explain"
"Sir, you really need to take all of this energy you have and put it toward something useful. Go borrow the money, beg on the street for all I care. Pay me by tuesday"
"Paul there is no need to be an asshole"
"Well stop being a waste to society. Pay your debt loser" Click.....beeeep
Sonofabitch
This time my father calls back because I am shaking I am so mad.
He speaks with Sonny....who transfers us to none other that Kim Smirnov (who was mentioned earlier in this thread
My father advises her that I have allowed him to speak on my behalf...I confirm this on the other line.
She speaks a bit about the situation and listens to him until he says this magic phrase.
"You are within your rights I assume to demand full payment, however you are under a pre-existing contract with my son, to which you are in possesion of post dated cheques under his bank account. If you wish to renegotiate this agreement please send all of the cheques, a copy of balance owing, and the written agreement you wish to negotiate to said law office"
Kim's response was "oh so you are a lawyer" (of course he never said that...she just assumed) "well if you are a lawyer I would like to look up your credentials"
At this point she went on a small rant and became quite defensive (noticing a trend)
Once she finally setteled down my father said "listen, I am not making threats. If you are in possesion of cheques that you are still cashing that means you have agreed to a contract....so if you want it all at once we need the cheques back and it goes to legal because that puts you in breach of contract"
Kim "We only make agreements for 6 months at a time"
"well then why would you accept full payment, shouldn't you only accept 6 months worth of payments?"
"Well the agent who set this up SHOULD HAVE told you it was only good for 6 months and Shouldn't have accepted full payment in cheques.
"ahem...should have....." my dad responds
At this point Kim FLIPPED
"This is entrapment, you are trying to entrap me"
"Umm no Im not....but you did just admit that..." Click....beeeeeep
I spoke with Kim a few minutes later now knowing that somehow she might be singing a different tune....
She says she will be mailing me "risk assesment forms" so I can fill out my financial information and negotaite a new payment plan.....
umm she's got the money...we can a contract...
its been a week and I still have no letter.....
Incidently my father works for Canada post (not in the legal department) so he's not a lawyer but he knows that mail from Ontario to Alberta takes less than a week....
They should be cashing a cheque from me on Friday....that seals the contract as it stands...
I can't wait to see her in court and I think thats where this will end up
I have been receiving these harrassing phone calls 3 or 4 times a day for the past 2 weeks. The recording says "press 1 to speak to an agent" and when I press 1 I sit on hold until I hang up.
Apparently they are trying to collect for a trip on the 407 that I never took. I also have not lived at the address they are siting for 5 years and they are just trying to contact me now.
I called the number for Margaret Delaney (thank you to the person who provided it) and spoke to Debbie. She said they sent me a letter at my old address (which I never received).
I told her I was willing to pay the $28.86 407 charge (even though I have never been on the 407) but I was not prepared to pay their fee. She said she would speak to the 407 to see if they were willing to accept that and that the phone calls would stop until she got an answer. She wanted my home address, which I refused to give her, but allowed her to send correspondence to my work address.
I don't know how they got my phone number because it's unlisted.
I'll let you know the outcome.
CBCL just recently started calling my parents house, since i have voip my number is unlisted they used the only other last name of my name listed which is my parents. They are now auto dialing them 2 times a day 5 days a week.
Sure i have a outstanding debt, but statue of limitations has since past on the claim and they can't do shit.. Legally they can try to collect but unless your dum enough to assume you have a debt and send them a payment then the statue of limitations is lfted and then they can do something.
Since i am not that dum i will never assume the debt by sending a payment so i than owe the balance! They had their chance now legally they can't do a thing. But harass a person to pay, when legally they have no claim!
Anyways my parents are now tracing and logging all calls by CBCL and they will soon be dealt with by the local phone company with harrasement.
Suck it up CBCL you ain't getting a dime, an you may be the one being sued. Since no letter was ever mailed saying i had a debt with them. An legally they need to notify a person in writing before they can even start their auto dialer Bull S**t.
So in the end these calls are going to stop soon, once the RCMP and the local telephone company steps in.
CBCL does nothing but break the law with their practices, now it is my turn to fight back....
I was called several times a day for at least 7 months. They would start calling at 6:45am and would call up until 10:45pm (even on weekends) I told them several times they had the wrong person and they said I had to pay or would be taken to court (this debt was for $58.49)I ended up suffering anxiety due to this harrasment and had a breakdown. I even contacted the company they said I owed the money to..which Sprint had no record of me owing any money to them. CBCL then called my employer and garnished my wages for a messly $60. They are now calling hounding me for a debt of $306.45 again for which I have no knowledge of and does not show on my credit report. If you are in Ontario it is PO Box 608 Willowdale Station B Toronto ONT M2K-2P3. Lets hope something is done about these harassing calls.
Well emailed the idiots CBCL and after threatening them they will be charged $200 per call after receipt of my email, (had a read on receipt). They broke 2 laws before the auto dialer was started. No letter stating of a debt, calling more than 3 times a day.
Anyways i had all calls traced and logged by my local telephone company for proof of the harrasement. I think the $200 a call scared them cause i was going to nail them to the wall!!
If your credit report is clear don't acknowledge you have a debt and want to make a payment. It will start the statue of limitations all over again!
A company etc has 6 years to collect a debt after that it is dead in a court if some retarded collection agency tries to make you pay!
If you had a debt and has been more than 6 years. Legally the debt is always there but you don't have to pay! Unless you are going to say you have a debt and make a payment, than your screwed!
If any retarded collection agency phones and says you owe whatever it is say i have no debt and my credit is fine CLICK!
If they keep harassing you trace and log the calls by your local phone company and next time they call tell them they are being logged and traced for harrasement!
The calls will certainly stop!
I had the local phone company tracing and logging, next step was the RCMP involved. I had a previous debt but they took too long to collect so they have nothing on me, now it is only harrasement!
Bottom line CBCL kiss my A** you have got no shit on me!!
I moved to Toronto in September 1999 and applied for Bell telephone line. The first week after the phone was connected I started to get phone call and message. The callers were looking for someone whom I don't know and never heard in my life. I thought they dialed wrong number, so I ignored the message or told them that they dialed wrong number and I don't know the guy they are looking for.
I tried to explain they have the wrong phone number, but the guy at the otherside of the phone line was rude most of the time. For unknown reason they stopped call my phone for one year. But suddenly the haunted message come back yesterday and today.
The caller phone number is 1-800-281-9643 which is CANADIAN BONDED CREDITS.
I will deeply appreciated if you could give me any advice how to let them stop the harrassment.

Unfortunatley I had an outstanding phone bill with Aliant and received no official letter from Canadian Bonded Credits Ltd. stating this matter was going into collections or that it was in arrears. I unwittingly paid $120.00 into an unknown account without receipt or acknowledgment. I was also given 5 phone calls in one week from this individual. 3 apparently is the limit.
Furthermore, I was threatened this matter would be taken to Small Claims Court. It was not my intent to cause aggravation, however some hasty presumptions were made regarding my living situation. My only request was for some leniency until January 2007 when I begin receiving funds for my disability.
I also wanted to cease any further telephone communications and request all written correspondence after being fully informed of my rights, however now that I maybe in more trouble I have no way of returning a phone call or attaining a mailing address. People don't deserved to be harassed like this.
The small claims court is a bogus threat to try to get you to acknowledge a debt and make a payment, after you make a payment your screwed..
CBCL buys old debts from companies, they are out the money not the company you had a debt with. OF course they will try everything in the book to make you pay, as they paid a lower fee for your total det now they want to get cash for the old debts they bought...
CBCL has a lawyer on site, they may even send you a fake court documents all legal to do. Since they have a onsite lawyer they can fake documents into thinking oh no i am going to be sued in court..
Next time just ignore them, there was no court action i guarntee!

Here is the contact information that worked for me. They were quite cooperative with extending the deadline of payment. That much I am thankful for. The rest the bastards can rot in hell : )

here are many reasons people don't pay their debts—financial setback, poor repayment habits, overspending or sometimes they're just not happy with a product they bought.
Whatever the reason, it's important to communicate with the person who is owed money. When creditors understand the problem, chances are they will work out a reasonable, manageable way for the consumers to repay debts.
On the other hand, consumers who don't co-operate with their creditors may find their accounts turned over to collection agencies.
What is a collection agency?
A collection agency is an organization that obtains or arranges for payment of money owed to a third party; this could be a person or a company.
Why do businesses use collection agencies?
Collection agencies provide a service to businesses that:
* are too small to have a collection department of their own
* lack the expertise to collect the money themselves
* want to protect their company image
* think a collection agency will get faster results.
How do I deal with collection agencies?
If you've been notified in writing that an account has been turned over to a collection agency, don't panic. The agency isn't in business to make life unbearable for you—its management just wants to collect the money you owe its client.
What should I do?
*
* If possible, pay the money you owe. You won't have to deal with the agency once the account has been cleared.
* If it's impossible for you to pay the full amount at once, contact the agency, explaining why. Offer some alternative method of repayment, either in a lump-sum or a series of monthly payments. Follow up in writing and, if possible, enclose a good-faith payment.
* Never send cash. Always make payments in such a way that you have a receipt —either a cancelled cheque from your own bank or a receipt from the agency.
* Once the account has been officially turned over to a collection agency, you'll be dealing only with that agency when making arrangements for payment. Don't contact the original creditor—this just creates confusion—unless there's an error in the account. If that's the case, advise both the creditor and the collection agency.
Remember:
*
* Your attitude towards paying the debt has a lot to do with how co-operative the agency will be. For example, when making payments to the agency, be sure not to bounce cheques and miss payments. However, if your financial circumstances change, contact the collection agency and explain your current status and follow up in writing.
* Debts should not be treated lightly. They can result in court action, which could lead to money being taken from your paycheque (garnishee) or seizure of your assets.
If I feel I'm being treated unfairly by a collection agency, what can I do?
The Collection Agencies Act sets out a code of ethics for Ontario's collection agencies.
Ontario's consumer ministry worked with the industry to put this law into place to be sure all collection agencies and collectors follow the same set of rules. The public also has a better understanding of what collection agencies can and can't do. The regulations forbid collection agencies from:
* trying to collect a debt without first notifying the debtor in writing, at the debtor's last known address, that they have been assigned to the account
* recommending or initiating legal or court action on the collection of a debt without first notifying the debtor and obtaining the creditor's written permission
* making telephone or personal calls of such a nature or frequency to constitute harassment of the debtor or the debtor's family
* calling to collect a debt on a Sunday, statutory holiday or before 7 a.m. and after 9 p.m.
* implying or giving false or misleading information to any person that could damage the debtor or debtor's family
* demanding payment of a debt without giving the name and authority of the creditor, the collector and the balance of the money owed
* continuing to demand payment from a person who claims not to owe the money, unless the collector has tried every way to ensure the person actually is the debtor
* taking over a debt from a creditor without first advising the debtor.
Also:
Collectors are not, generally, allowed to contact a debtor's friends, employer, relatives or neighbors for information other than the debtor's telephone number or address. The only exceptions are contacting a person about a debt they've guaranteed to pay for the debtor or contacting an employer about payment connected with a wage assignment or a court order, or to confirm employment.
If you believe any of the above regulations have been breached by a collection agency, contact the head of the agency. If you're still not satisfied, contact the ministry at (416) 326-8555 or 1-800-268-1142.
Financial problems?
If your financial problems are getting out of hand, you should consider contacting a credit counselling service for help.
Assistance is offered, in many cases for a nominal fee, by member agencies of the Ontario Association of Credit Counselling Services. Credit counselling, available from more than 27 member agencies across the province, helps more than 20,000 Ontarians a year find the road to financial health.

Almost six years ago (it might be six years and one and one half months - I'm not sure), I told CBCL that I would no longer co-operate with them to settle my debt. This was due to the language and treatment that I received from their representatives. I'm not censoring anything that I say, so be warned.
After telling them that I did not incur a debt with them, but I did incur one with the company that sent the file to their agency, I asked for my account number or a contact number to deal directly with the creditor. They told me that I owed CBCL the money now and my account number was none of my business. I told them that I felt more comfortable dealing with the initial creditor. I also stated that I do not write cheques for reason that are my own. As well, I do not use credit cards (how would I get one with an R9 on my credit file). This meant that I would need to physically take payment to the business that I originally incurred the debt with (I also had no computer at the time).
They told me that that would not be acceptable and proceeded to demand full payment of the debt. I pointed out the irony of asking for that as, if I could service an entire demand for that amount, I would never have found myself in this position in the first place. I explained that I was a wickedly over-educated cashier with a part-time job and a child on the way. Being a father was going to be tough on my already empty wallet, and my spouse (at that time) had her own bills to pay.
I was called an asshole, a dirty white trash loser, a dead-beat and a sure thing to become an alcoholic that beats his kids. I was told that I was a dumb son-of-a-bitch and a fuckin' dork. Of course, I asked for a supervisor. I was told that she was a supervisor, and had dealt with enough god-damned stupid shitheads like me to know that I was full of shit.
I told them that I have never been treated this poorly (not by bullys - of which I had a few groing up, and not even by my monster-in-law - who is directly descended from the devil). I expressed my outrage at their treatment and told them that it would be a cold day in my mother-in-laws house before I paid THEM anything. I also said that I would gladly work out some arrangement with the actual creditor to pay it if they could provide me with the information that I needed (as I hadn't had the credit card for two years and didn't know the account number). Whomever I spoke to called me the dumbest piece of shit she'd ever spoken to (which surprised my 156 IQ).
After almost six years, they've started again (same debt as it was never paid because the info I needed was provided). The funny thing is, they're calling my girlfriends' house. They only have the number because I listed her as an emergency contact on a credit app.
CBCL has not sworn quite as profusely towards her or called her any names, but they are rude.
I have to wonder if they have to watch babies being beaten during training to become that angry. I've worked at a call centre, and I have never spoken to anyone like that. Not even the angry ones. I was well liked by clients that I spoke with because I did my job well without being a dink. It's hard to believe these people are still in business and actually have jobs. I bet the mob was nicer when collecting debts.
Cheers and good luck to everyone.

Well now. It looks like I have now been inducted into the hall of rude calls from Canadian Bonded Credit, also for someone that I don't know or ever heard of! I saved the messege quoting the persons name and account number. I called the number they left and got threw quickly. A guy answered the phone and he did his opening scrip, blahblahblah. I told him that I recieved a call for someone I didn't know and I have their info on my voice mail. He hung up on me. I called back and got another guy, I told him the situation and that I thought it was a breach of privacy. He said that it was for the phone number 604-***-*** and that if I hung up and called it that a phone somewhere in my house would ring because the telephone company gives us all 2 numbers. I said "I didn't know that", his reply "now you do". I told him that I have never had a phone with that number and that I thought it was a privacy issue. He said "what do you care it's not your information"!!!!! I asked to speak to his supervisor and he hung up on me. Wow!!!!!! I have worked in a call center myself and I know that if we had talked to the customers the way these people do that we would have been fired on the spot and esscorted out of the building. I have called Debbie at 1888-804-8198. She looked up the information and even disconnected the call with me to call the other number that the agent had given to me, guess what? The phone rang and it was the other person that they were trying to get ahold of!!!! I now know this other persons Phone number, Name and account number. What is wrong with this picture?
I have more of a request. I to have been called by CBCL for a traffic ticket that I had received back in 1993. Yes thats right 1993. For not wearing a seatbelt. I remember it because that was my first ticket ever. Also I got it while hanging out the passenger side window. (Leafs just beat I believe it was the blues). I at the time didnt even have my license yet. Well a year later when i did obtain my license i would say no more then two months my license was suspended for an unpaid fine. So either i pay the fine or no license. So i paid it. Well almost 12yrs later they are trying to collect again. And I quote from CBCL, "prove to us that you have already paid it." LAST TIME I CHECKED I WAS TOLD BY MY ACCOUNTANT THAT I SHOULD HOLD ON TO RECEIPTS FOR SEVEN YEARS.
Can anyone help me on what i should do here.
I do have hope for you all who are receiving these phone calls and don't want to receive them any more... All you need to do is file a complaint with the Ministry Of Consumer and Business Affairs.
Ministry of Government Services
Consumer Protection Branch:

Toll-Free: 1-800-889-9768
If you call the number you can have a complaint package sent to your home and you can outline the details of your complaint there... The best thing for everyone who has a complaint is to make it formal with the Ministry, doing so will prompt them to take action a lot faster in this matter.
Hoping you all a successful time with this.
I don't know if anyone can help me with this but CBCL called me yesterday, four years after I lost my home to foreclosure and stated that they were representing the government with a claim from CMHC for the residual on the house after taking possession and selling it he called and demanded $37,000 from me. I told him if I had $37,000 I would not have lost the damned house in the first place. The story is lengthy and not worth discussing however at the time I was also in bankruptcy. This idiot tells me that the courts placed a judgement against me. When I told him I had not even received a letter about courts, etc. he said they didn't have to because it was government. He's told me if I don't make arrangements he'll have them garnishee my wages because it is the government agency of CMHC, I don't really know what to do, I don't have lawyer money and I certainly don't have $37,000. Do they really collect for the Federal Government I find that hard to believe.
Thanks if anyone can help.
I am suprised that someone that works for a phone company has not looked up the unlisted numbers for the board of directors of canadian bonded credit and posted them on the web. 20 calls in the evening and night would be suitable i think. The calls could discuss their illegal business practices with them.
I was a former employee at CBCL in the summer of 2006. it was the absolute worst collection company that I have ever worked for! I've worked for other strict collection agencies, but nothing to the degree of disrespect toward the employees as CBCL. First of all, the Human Resources Representative is probably the only nice person who works there. (Joe)but that's the catch! you are led to beleive that it is such a great progressive work environment. In reality, new employees are made to sign a waiver stating that CBCL will deduct $50 CAN from every paycheck to pay for your canadian collection licensing for each province. It comes to a grand total sum of $750. If you decide to quit, CBCL will confiscate your last paycheck to make up this astronomical sum of $750. (Most people go to work to make money! not to give it back to their employer!) However, CBCL is counting on you to quit before that $750 sum is paid off. what this means is that they cancel your applications for collection licenses and keep your money. After working there for a couple days, you realize that many people quit daily. Maybe even hourly from what I saw. It is an extremely high turnover place to work.
A couple days later when training is over, they placed you into your department that you will be collecting for. You are Immeadiately met with a high level of hostility from your manager. My manager was a bi-lingual lady named Alexis Stevens. She seemed really nice during training, but as soon as we got to our cubicles, she became a raging tyrant. (to say the least.) She repeatedly pulled different employees into a secluded room and YELLED at them about petty matters.(it felt like Nazi stormtrooper kindergaten) The employees that had been working there for a while were petrofied of her, and had completely been stripped of any dignity or character that they had.
Bad talking about the management was rampant among all employees during breaktime. (young and old & new and experienced - it didn't matter who) The hostility and high collection quotas drove people to quit daily.
The amount of money collected directly reflected upon the manager's monthly bonus. Remember the TTC strike? on that day, only 2 people showed up to work in my department. Alexis called me and yelled at me. She told me that I had to get to work in 30 minutes, or I would face the chopping block. I told her "good luck getting that to happen, and CBCL will have to pay $50 for a cabride up there." The next day I arrived to work, and nothing happened, no chopping block, and no apology from Alexis. As a result, the TTC strike seriously affected the month's quota. At the end of the month, the quota fell short about $3000 among a team of 20 -25 collectors. This gave Alexis the excuse to YELL at everybody at once. She was so nasty, 1 person started crying, and 2 others quit on the spot.
When I got hired there, I was placed in the POA department (Provincial Offences Act) This is the department where CBCL buys old debts from the govenment of Ontario, and CBCL tries to collect on them.
The POA dept tries to collect about 400000 old and outstanding debts. dating back to about 1990 or so.
The Dailer, (the computer that calls people in excess of 10 times a day) for some reason is located in Ohio USA. (CBCL is an American company) Until a payment is made on your debt, the dailer calls you continuously until the debt is paid off in full. So lets say you owe $100, if you pay $50 now, and $50 next month, the dailer continues to call you repeatedly until the debt is paid. (you cant Imagine how annoying and intrusive this is when you owe a large sum of money) POA is just 1 dept of this company. This company has many departments, and about 300 - 400 people working at any given time.
Lets say you live in Toronto, and that you didnt pay a $20 parking ticket in 1990, and in 1993 you moved to Oshawa. The dailer will call the number listed in 1990. The person using the number now (I.E. cell phone user) is called repeatedly. The message on the dailer is automated and vague. its designed to put you in such a state of panic, compunded with the fact that it dails you 10 times a day. The person with cell phone calls and has the number dropped from the list. (but only after many annoying personal questions and being put on hold for an unspecified amount of time) Now the account is passed to the search dept and they find a new listing for that person, and the process is repeated again and again untii the debt is paid. When the dailer did get a hold of the right person, the account gets passed on to a dedicated collector. It was very normal to hear collectors yell on the phone at debtors.
So lets say you fess up to the debt. You Identify yourself as the debtor, and you are willing to pay the $20. CBCL wants you to go through an elaborate process of paying the debt in the way they specify, (one method is depositing the money directly into their bank account at any CIBC in Canada) then faxing the receipt back to them, and a follow up call. (didn't I just wait on the phone for 20 mins???) The dailer doesn't stop calling until 24 hours after the receipt has been faxed in to them. The follow up call is optional, but if you dont want to be called by the dailer again, I suggest you make a follow up call to ensure your account is paid in full and closed. (its all a little too annoying for the average joe. Its even a little too annoying for collectors most of the time.)
In the end I was let go, because Alexis listened in on a private phone call that I made to freind. (A call made on a non dailer phone specifically designated for personal employee calls.) I was discussing with him how unhappy I was at CBCL, and if he knew of any other job leads. Alexis then pulled me into a secluded room and asked me if there was anything I wanted to discuss with her. (in the wonderfully pleasant way that she goes about things...) At this point after 4 weeks of working there, I decided that I'd seen enough, and it would be easier to go onto welfare and look for a better job.
Folks,
thanks for all the tips.
I have been getting calls from these people. I spoke to someone in a legal job role, they advised to call them and ask that they stop calling you.
I just left a voice mail for one of their agents politely. If this continues, I am going to give them some of their own medicine.
CBCL has been calling me more than the 3 times a week for over a month. So much for adhereing to what they are legally allowed. On occasion have called twice a day, despite the fact I did call them back.
The debt is for $52 for Doubleday Book Club, which I do not owe. I've sent faxes, written registered letters & after receiving a response from Doubleday which basically said "to bad so sad - pay up", I have put it into the hands of my lawyer.
I would sooner pay him for his expertise than pay a bill I did not incur.
wow, I feel your pain... but if there is one good collector out there, I found him, and of all things, he works for CBCL.
I'm trying to get a mortgage and after years of changing phone numbers and addresses(quite successfully, i might add) I thought old debts wouldn't really be an issue since 7 years have passed. Boy was i wrong. So my mortgage broker got my credit report and found a few things that were passed to CBCL for collection. I got on the phone with them and reluctantly gave them my phone # and current address so they could find everything. They then had me hold for about 15 or 20 minutes before I was transfered to Rick. He greeted me with a "hi how are ya?" and I explained my mortgage stipulations to him. He gave me a list of what I owed, account #'s, and suggested I pay it online so I wouldn't have to leave work. He also faxed over a letter of release to my mortgage guy for me.
Just to put the icing on the cake, I got my Transunion report today and saw another collection from CBCL that he didn't tell me about. I dialed him up since he gave me his direct line, and he put me on hold, and 20 minutes later, he told me that he'll fax the release letter to the same # that he used last week. He suggested that I fax a copy of it to the company involved as well since they are still showing the collection as open and are being complete dicks about it...
it's real bad when I prefer to deal with the agency instead of the company who sent me to the agency...
Rick deserves a big thanks for helping me clean up my credit and taking alot of crap that is dealt because of the business he's in.
Hello - this website is a true eye-opener, and one of the great benefits of the WWW.
CBCL has called me every day at least once, Sundays included, for more than 3 months, trying to collect from someone I've never heard of. Most recently they've switched to French in the messages they leave.
I finally phoned them back last week. First guy I spoke to said it would stop "immediately". Didn't. Called back the next day, and was informed of the "48 hour" rule. I blew up, they hung up.
I HIGHLY recommend that if you live in Ontario you DO NOT go to CBCL's "ombudsman" site. Their practices constitute a violation of the Ontario Collection Agencies Act, and they are liable to fines of up to 1,000 dollars for EACH violation.
Go to the Consumer Protection Branch at http://www.gov.on.ca/MGS/en/News/STEL02_047078.html and follow the links to give notice of complaint ONLINE.
DON'T deal directly with the credit agency. DONT stop your complaint even if they stop the calls. It's like ASKING the National Enquirer not to lie in print - they'll ONLY stop when sued (see other posts), fined (see link above) and harassed (there is NO law governing a consumer using an autodialer to constantly phone them)
I work for the government of Ontario (different Ministry than Consumer Protection). Let me assure you that helping go after a rogue collection agency is the stuff Ministry staff LOVE to do - it gives them good press, AND they're helping people. The law is very clear cut and they can get results for you. Stick to your guns!
Alright, I smell bullshit. Ive looked at all of the addresses in this blog, and none match the one I was given by a cbcl rep(oddly enough a nice enough girl in montreal) and I got this address, im starting to think this is bogus.
suite 101
7171 Jean-Talon E
Mtl Qc
H1M 3N2.
Has anybody gotten this from them? Im not sending them shit until Im sure its not some copy cat scam...
I used to have another collection agency calling all the time, then it switched to this cbcl crap out of the clear blue sky. (Llant couldnt handle it or some shit)
This is all very interesting guys, but I have something to add. CBCL has actually gotten to the point where they have posted an overdue bill on my Canadian National Credit Report that I have never heard of, and the bill is posted in Newfoundlandfrom a debt owing in 2005. Funny thing is, I have been living in Alberta since the Spring of 2004!! I need to find a way to fix this and fast, because this collection has actually made it to my credit report, making it difficult to obtain credit, a mortgage, or finance a car. Any suggestions? I have been calling all of the numbers that are posted here, but always get caught in the loop, so to speak. Some help?

I JUST A RUN-IN WITH CBCL. A MAN BY THE NAME OF MR. LANDU CALLED AND THREATENED ME - IT'S NOT EVEN MY DEBT. I FINALLY GOT A TOLL FREE NUMBER 1-877-503-2115 AND SPOKE TO HIS SUPERVISOR. I FINALLY GOT A CEASE AND DESIST ORDER FOR HIM!!! IT'S A SMALL VICTORY - BUT AT LEAST IT'S SOMETHING.
I had an Amex card with a small amount owing..ran into financial difficulty...anyway worked out a monthly payment plan they made some errors an sent me to CBCL.
But thanks to reading this blog, I feel better I collected all the info. I did try to reslove the issue again with Amex..by offering 9 payments 92.66 a month..they said sorry...resolve the issue with CBCL...the beauty is I sent cheques to Amex...so they said they will cash them and send the money to CBCL...how stupid is that.
Anway I am still waiting for CBCL to starting calling me.....well when I am doing well again financially Amex will never get me as a customers again...Amex is the worst...
I had them start calling me about 18 months ago. I told them I would like to resolve my debt with the original company. They claimed that I owed over $4000 to BC Medical Service for unpaid monthly medicare fee's...?
what are the laws within BC? as far as them calling me? I have NOT received any letter in the mail, nor have a I received any collection notices from BC Med either.
They are also calling my cellular telephone. Is there some law against them calling a cell? It's wasting my minutes when I have picked up their messages and also sat on hold to no avail with them.
I have CBCL calling my cell none stop in regards to my Line of Credit account. I have explain why my payment fell behind with the bank cause I lost my job. now that I am working I am willing to pay $150.00 per week towards the balance that is owing which is $10g My payments each month would be $600 in total they told me no that they want me to pay my arrears of $3000 right now. i told them I tried to get a co-signer for the loan and asked family to help an no one can. There is nothing else I can do besides pay them each week 150. Still they say no. Now they are threating to take my car to pay back the debty. My question for you guys If you can help Can they take my car that I do not owe because i am financing it from a dealer ship and i still have 22 payments left on it and it's a secure loan. Does CBCl have any right to take my car and repo it? OR do they have to except that payments that I can afford each week??
HELP ME
They were phone me, and each person had a different story about me owing money for a 'Parking Ticket'.
One said 'City of Vancouver' another said 'Advance Parking'.
Two others phoned and harassed me without asking for money.
Not once did they mention an amount
Finally went to Consumers & Protection, and they showed me how to stop the calls.
What a scam.
Had to look these guys up, since I just got home from being out of the country for seven months. Seems while I was in Asia on business, I somehow ended up in my local hospital (BC Vancouver), from which a bill has been created. I then phoned a Mr. Michael Irwin. When I told him I had plane tickets, and a company behind me to prove I was out of the country, I got the "that's what they all say" and he hung up. What's up with these people. Does one have to fail an I.Q. test in order to get a job there?
Here is a neat one for ya all in regards to these debt buying idiots.
Not being proud of it but found myself having to claim bankrupcy in feb 2003.
Having a sprint long distance plan in the rears it fell into the time frame before i filed for bankruptcy. apparently after going thru 3 departments with the nasa scientists at rogers, they told me they had bought sprint, which i really dont bother myself with keeping up with who is buying who out, so i dont care, rogers ya bought the debt. anyway this sprint account was owing by myself prior to me filing for bankruptcy. The yahoos for some reason at rogers sold this debt to our buddys at cbcl(post bankruptcy and after my discharge date if ya can believe it) lol. After dealing with numerous people with limited customer service skills or lack of the commmand of the english language at cbcl. One fellow there actually told me to provide my bankruptcy information, which i did. Im hoping now after they speak with the trustee in banckruptcy and are told by a third party representative that they are hooped ,that they will back off and see they bought a real dud of a debt.
And once again they cant provide an account number or anything for me to go by except the debt from 4 years ago.
p.s
I find it quite strange tho how rogers automatic accounting system recongizes my land line number that sprint long distance was registered too and the fact that the fellow at rogers asked me for the password for my account which i recalled and gave it to him, but yet he could not give me any details on how much i owed sprint and what my sprint account number was, as far as i was concerned was not important due to being bankrupt, and starting off fresh.
in the end i dont think those donkeys are going to waste my time anymore after they phone my trustee.
oh ya one more thing too its not the educated that i fear its the money hungry corparate shark who dont swim by the rules.
I do not believe there is any law that requires an individual to exchange any information over the phone with anyone. Since the identity of the party on the other end cannot be verified, you should not exchange any information including your name or identity. Each time you freely give information over the phone to unidentified and unverified persons you are compromising your personal security.
Since all the people posting here either own or have access to a computer, why not set up your own autodialer. If I am not mistaken their toll free number is not toll free to them, they pay for each call. Since you are not attempting to collect but rather to respond, any legislation limiting calls does not apply to you. If enough people do this, they might get the message.
I've been getting these calls for a few weeks now, and I've never been in debt in my life. The only thing that would come close was "missing" a rent payment, but that was due to management error (I just about hit the roof when they said they lost my cheque) and was resolved within a week. That was about 4 months ago.
Anyway, the first couple times I answered these calls, I just got silence on the line, so I ignored calls from the number since then. They've never left a message on my answering system, but the phone always ringing twice a day is starting to annoy me.
So, I'm going to try one of two things: either start answering the calls and hope to get a live person on the line, or call them back at the 1-877 number in reply. I'm going to tell them the person they've been looking for has moved to Gatineau, Quebec, and give them the number (819) 997-0313... which is the CRTC's local number.
Maybe that will get someone's attention.
These friggin idiots have been calling my residence for weeks, on a daily basis...often more than once a day. They leave a message which I have to listen to so that I can erase it off of my phone every damn time! I was actually home one time and hit the re-dial and asked why they were calling me.The guy asked for my phone number and after I gave it to him there was a long pause and then he says that my number does not come up on their list.Well that's funny because you call every day and leave a message! He asks again for my number which I repeat(I am now using my angry voice)and he is not responding after a minute or so of fumbling around on the other end of the line.I start worrying that I am being charged per minute for calling them or something weird...so I hang up.This all seems totally bogus to me,and I don't owe anyone any money to begin with. What the heck!!I am getting soooo very angry with these repeated messages everyday when I come home from work. How does one make them stop this nonsense????Another interesting thing is that the messages never say who the call is for. They should say who they are and who they are trying to reach when they call! Unbelievable!
I just called 888-804-8198. A woman answered. I politely asked to have my cell number removed from their call list, and she looked up my number.
"Douglas Smith?" she asked, to which I answered, "Never heard of him." With not a second's hesitation she responded, "OK, I'll take you off the list."
Hopefully the calls will stop. But this sure doesn't sound like a legitimate operation to me.
I called and left each message for each number this forum provides.
If they don't stop calling, I will use my PC to do automatic dialing to the numbers every 30 seconds unless they file a complaint against me and I will stop.
Why not using their logic against them?
It is easy to do automatic dialing and just use the fax function in your PC.
well, that is not cool. I will post their phone numbers in each site I can think of. So people will call them by mistake. "by mistake" is OK. That is their logic. Right? The point is: they need to stop this kind of practice. But they won't do so unless enough people turn against them.
well, i recived a call from this company and it staed that i should call them back as soon as possible. It caught my curiosity so i immediately called them back. I waited until i was able to speak to a representative...and 2 minutes and then told them that i didn't know why they had called...they were calling for someone I didn't know and i told them so. Immediately they apologized and stated they would take my name off the list. I really didn't find them a problem. This was my first call from them.
I have had trouble with these people calling me on weekends as well and sometimes at 8 or 9 pm in the evenings. There is never anyone on the other end and it's very harrassing. They apparantley are not supposed to do this any more but they keep on. I think we should all consider a class action if they aren't stopped soon. What do you think?
We are on disability and the collector knows this and will not listen to reason...always getting upset and yelling at me. At 60 years old I dont' think I deserve this kind of treatment.
I worked for Irmc then iqor a subsiduary of CBCL.What a load of scumbags. 3 years without a raise supervisors who monitored calls from 20 days before nitpicked at small things just to keep you from a raise or a bonus. They even deducted 160.00 from a paycheque to replace headphones. Never cleaned the office and i got fired for speaking up. i won my case with EI now I want my severance pay. Brent Pattison of Iqor in Cambridge the vp of sprint is the town scumbag and melanie coulson my last supervisor is the a psycho. You know for three years in a row our christmas gift was a plastic tim horton's mug they probably got inbulk. The labels washed of in one wash. They probably found coffee mugss lying around from old employees washed them and gave them outthe next christmas knowing these cheap bastards,Brent took the attitude that we do not give raises for people showing up everyday. judging by what i saw I was the only one who did show up everyday. The supervisors were the first out of dodge. They made contracts and broke them by changing shifts. mycoworkers treated the customers like dogs. What a bunch of yahoos they were i stuck up for them by bringing in the labour and health board they didn't even phone when I got fired.Screw them. Well I never got severance pay ecen though Ei paid out agreeing any misconduct on my part was provoked. Please email me at jtzikas3@yahoo.com if tou had similar experiences at work with cbcl so we can plan action to take these bastards down strength in numbers not just emailing we have to stand up canada for rights not to be exploited at work by prospective employers with their dumb questions in interviews about previous jobs. should i call for my severance pay or get a lawyer they are not civil people.
I'm downloading a free autodialer from the web and setting it up to call them every 5 minutes when I'm not home or at night. Nobody will answer but they pay $ for every toll-free call they receive...let's see how they like the relentless phone calls.

I received my credit history the other day only to discover a FIDO/ROGERS WIRELESS account from 10-2002 submitted to CBCL 06-2007. I have never been a customer of that company nor co-signed for anyone who is. Obviously, I would never have been contacted by anyone anytime regarding this by neither phone nor letter.
It took quite some time to a) discover CBCL's phone number, b) reach someone capable of understanding my request, and c) being transferred to an extention that i)wasn't a fax number, ii) was capable of receiving voice messages, iii) didn't disconnect after two strange beeps, iv) have a strange person pick up with a confused sounding 'hello?', and v)was to whom my 'file' was being referred. I obediently faxed requested documentation to 1-866-637-7783, later spoke with Caroline White (416)790-2734 who then, conveyed this error to the creditor. It was confirmed that indeed an error was committed by FIDO/ROGERS WIRELESS who wouldn't know me from Adam. Ms White contacted TransUnion AND Equifax on my behalf to inform of the correction and by this afternoon, my credit report was clean as a whistle. All this was me being proactive to protect my credit rating and history. I was quite satisfied with my experience once connected to someone who doesn't read from a script.
I, too am an unfortunate person who has had the ultimate displeasure of dealing with CBCL. I had a student loan from 1998 and mind you I was avoiding their calls. After they finally caught up with me at my place of work, I had to no other choice but to try and work something out. I only owed them a little over $3000 for my loan, at which time the guy told me to borrow it from a family member or friend...yeah right!
At first the threats were that they would take me to court and guarnish my wages. "Do you want to keep switching jobs, so we can't guarnish your wages?" is what I was asked. I couldn't believe this...not only was I being harassed at work, but they were threatening me.
I have worked out a payment plan similiar to another person who has posted a rather nasty experience with this company on here. I pay them $122 faithfully every month and have never missed a payment. The 6 month term is true...they usually contact me when the 6 months is up to set up a new 6 month pre-authorized debit plan. Until yesterday this has been sufficient enough for them. Because yesterday I received a letter in the mail saying that they now want full payment for the rest of my outstanding balance.
I have to admit that my loan is down to $800, but I am a single mom with three kids...there is no way I can come up with $800 to give to them. They only have 4 more months to pay them off. Why can't they wait for their money? I am just wondering when the harassing phone calls will start again for $800. Come on don't they have better things to do?
I work with the public on a daily basis and have to work in collections and not once have I threatened someone or called them a deadbeat...it's like they get a free pass to take out all their person frustration on unsuspecting debt owers.
Maybe they should be happy with the ones who are making an effort to pay and start using a little diplomacy to the ones who do still owe to get them to pay!!!
Thanks for having this site...now I feel much better!!!
Todays Date is Aug 11/08. To bad the time frames mentioned don't include the date.
If any of you who read this have email addresses for anyone (I want as many as possible by the way) employed by CBCL please send to suds96@yahoo.com.
I have had it with their BS. I don't owe these bastards one cent, but unfortunately 1.5 yrs ago due to health reason I was forced to move and due to such I received a new phone # that belonged to someone, I gather who did owe.
I am a permanently disabled firefighter with was injured while trying to save anothers life.
I have an incredable credit rating even though I have never been compensated for my injury beyond being told it happened playing hockey...lmao.
I have been jerked around enough by both the fed/BC govts, the BC/DND Ombudsman, BC compo, and 3 unions(PSAC/UNDE/IAFF) that are, including the fore mentioned, as useless as tits on a bull.
Now these bastards have the audacity to harass, disrespect my human rights, invade my privacy and disrupt my already not exactly normal life, all due to a previously owned by another, phone number.
I will do everything in my power to make these bastards pay while giving it my best shot to take them down if given the right info (fed/prov govt edresses/800 or direct long distance #'s, CBCL edresses only) to do such.
I don't take shit from no one and I have had it with the constant turmoil that these bastards have created in my life by simply interfering whith my rest which comes speratically and limited at the best of times.
Kindest regards, WLD
PS...Little puppies piss on big wheels. I am the little puppy and CBCL is the big wheel...:o)
Hi!
I'm presently an employee of CBCL, now called iQor and must say a few things. First, by law, we are allowed to call people once per day per phone number which is why they have an automatic calling center keeping track of the calls. Second, some employees tend to forget a few things: We are supposed to confirm ID with the person we call and make sure it's the right person, we must also remove their phone number if ID was wrong. So, if you do not check-in with the address and last 4 digits of your SIN, ask to remove your phone number. I hope this helps and that you won't be too frustrated with the business as we are sticking to a strict policy that protects the consumer. If you ever feel the employee is not following the law or is harassing you, file a complain on the employee.
I hope this helps...
I will be honest with you... I am a debt collector and I have to deal with this on a daily basis... Here is where YOU all are going wrong. Firstly these numbers aren't picked out of a hat... They are supplied by the CREDITOR in whom we are collecting for... If you get a recycled # and start getting calls... Its is YOUR first mistake to ignore the calls... Ignoring calls is every professional debtors instinct and therefore why # will keep getting called and nothing will be done... Most people wait months before calling and saying its a wrong # and say its our fault... Meanwhile if u called in PLEASANTLY the first time saying its wrong u will be surprised to know we r nice to deal with and will take YOUR NUMBER OFF THE FILE!! If u call in screaming at a collector they will ofcourse believe its a wrong # or yell back at u and belittle you cause sorry to tell u... WE AREN'T MIND READERS ITS YOUR OWN FAULT FOR WAITING MONTHS AND MONTHS BEFORE SAYING ITS A WRONG NUMBER... So next time before u write a huuugggeeeeeee website about getting collection agencies to stop calling u if its a wrong #.. Use your head its common sense... Phone call... Wrong #... Call back right away to inform someone...
I think these people are just scum. This company has been calling me everyday twice a day for the past 2 weeks and its getting annoying. In the past I had the same problem from another collection agency harrassing me for someone with the name similar to mine just off by one letter. They still never stopped calling me. The debt was 68 bux and I was so fed up and no one out there to help that I paid someone elses bill. Well now the same thing is happening again with my new number. I will not pay the money and I told them that there harrassing me phoning me twice a day for the past 2 weeks. There excuse is well its an automatic dialer. I said who cares if its an automatic dialer, it still connects me to a human. I would love to get a whole bunch of people and go down to there office and protest. Lets see how they like it when the PEOPLE contact them in person. Lets take a stand is something I would love to do, but noooo were not allowed too otherwise we might get arrested. @$#%@% that I dont care anymore I want this to stop.... If someone wants to setup a protest and go to there office in toronto with me (not just a couple ppl, im talking like 20 or 30) then email me at eric_marchi@hotmail.com
